Candidatul republican Tim Scott se ciocnește cu „The View” în timpul cursei

Topline

The co-hosts of ABC’s The View broke into a chaotic argument with Candidatul republican la președinție Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) Monday over the issue of race, following criticism from several hosts since Scott announced his candidacy.

Fapte-cheie

Scott, who is the only Black Republican in the Senate, said he agreed to appear on the show because he wanted to confront the hosts’ criticism, including co-host Sunny Hostin’s previous statement that Scott is “ignoring . . . the fact that he is the exception and not the rule” for Black Americans and “seems to think, ‘because I made it, everyone can make it,’” she said shortly after he announced his campaign on May 22.

Scott, when asked by Hostin to define systemic racism, pivoted to Hostin’s May 22 statement, calling it “a dangerous, offensive, disgusting message to send to our young people today,” while listing off accomplished Black politicians, including former President Barack Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, two previous secretaries of state and law enforcement officials in South Carolina.

Hostin, who is Black and Latina, defended her comments about Scott being the “exception and not the rule” and suggested he was downplaying racial disparities, while citing a 40% homelessness rate among African Americans, who she said make up 13% of the population.

When asked by co-host Whoopi Goldberg to speak about the Republican party’s record on race issues, Scott said “both sides of the aisle can do a better job.”

Citat crucial

“When it comes to racial inequality, it persists in five core aspects of life in the U.S. — economics, education, health care, criminal justice and housing,” Hostin said. “At nearly every turn, these achievements were fought, threatened and erased, most often by white violence.”

Fundalul cheie

Scott has repeatedly fired back at The View co-hosts after several claimed he does not understand systemic racism. He took particular issue with recent comments from co-host Joy Behar, who reportedly had Monday off. Hours after Scott announced his candidacy for president, Behar claimed “he’s one of these guys, like Clarence Thomas, Black Republican, who believes in pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, rather than understanding the systemic racism that African Americans face in this country and other minorities.” Scott previously called the comments the “dumbest, most offensive thing [he’s]

ever heard on TV.” Goldberg also claimed Scott has “Clarence Thomas syndrome,” referring to the conservative Supreme Court justice, and said his denouncement of victimhood in his campaign announcement was a racist “dog whistle.” Scott has made his personal story growing up as the child of a single mother in the South a central message of his campaign platform. He has spoken about how he learned to “think [his] way out of poverty,” and promoted “individual responsibility” over “victim culture” in a video announcing his campaign. Scott suggested over the weekend The View co-hosts were promoting “lies” proliferated by “the radical left and Joe Biden in their criticism of him,” he told an audience in Iowa, adding “it’s time for a conservative with a backbone to look those ladies in the eyes and say you do not have to be an exception to succeed in America.”

Tangentă

Scott was booed by the audience when he defended Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.)’s war with Disney during his appearance on the talk show. “Disney and Ron have been in a combat zone over what I thought is the right issue, which is our young kids and what they are being indoctrinated with,” Scott said, referring to DeSantis’ efforts to curb the company’s power after it publicly opposed Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law that prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade. “Don’t boo. This is The View,” Goldberg told the audience, apologizing to Scott.
