The Department of Justice will review law enforcement’s response to Tuesday’s elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the agency announced Sunday, after local police were criticat for not quickly confronting the shooter.

The review aims to offer an independent account of law enforcement’s actions on the day of the shooting, and will identify lessons for first responders preparing for future active shooter incidents, DOJ spokesperson Anthony Coley said in a declaraţie.

The review was requested by Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin and will be carried out by the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing, Coley a spus.

The announcement came two days after Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw a spus local police made the “wrong decision” when they delayed breaching the classroom where the Uvalde shooter was barricaded, a decision for which McCraw said there was no excuse.

Police at the school believed the shooter was no longer active, and they had time to wait for tactical teams to arrive and for a school janitor to bring keys to the classroom, McCraw a spus. However, 911 calls indicată that students were still alive in the classroom.
